Most Popular Questions

Do I need to contact the town before drilling a well?

Yes, it’s essential to contact your town before proceeding with well drilling. Each town has different requirements, including possible permits and specific setback regulations related to roads, waterfronts, and other factors.

How do I ensure the well is positioned correctly on my property?
  • The well must be at least 60 feet away from your septic system and any abutting neighbors' septic systems.
  • It should be 100 feet away from your disposal field and any neighboring disposal fields.
  • The well must be 50 feet away from any body of water.
  • The well must be 20 feet away from any house or building.
What do I need to do about trees and overhead wires near the drilling site?

Any trees or wires that are less than 40 feet high must be removed, or the wires need to be insulated by CMP (Central Maine Power). Our drilling rig needs to raise its tower to a 90-degree angle, and low-hanging wires or trees can obstruct this.

What if my site doesn’t meet the required conditions?

If your site doesn’t meet the necessary conditions, contact our office to schedule a site inspection. While we do not have a dedicated site inspector, we can arrange for a driller to assess your site when they are in the area. Please be patient, as scheduling may depend on their current workload.

How much space is needed for the drilling equipment?

We need a site large enough to accommodate two vehicles the size of Greyhound buses. These vehicles will be positioned side by side to facilitate the drilling process.

How should I mark the location for the well?

Use a stake or flag to mark the exact spot where you want the well to be drilled. Remember, once the well is drilled, this location is permanent.

When should I have the trench dug for the pump installation?

The trench must be dug after the well is drilled but before the pump installation. Please do not dig the trench before the well is drilled, as this could cause safety issues and additional work. The trench should be dug either by hiring an excavation company or doing it yourself.

What are the specific requirements for the trench?
  • Depth: The trench must be 4-5 feet deep to prevent freezing. If the trench will be driven over or cannot reach 4 feet in depth, blueboard insulation can be used, with 1 inch of blueboard equivalent to 1 foot of digging.
  • Width: The trench should be 3-4 feet wide to allow our pump crew enough space to work safely.
  • No Refunds: There is no refund or discount for customers who supply their own pressure tank, water, or electrical line, as these are included in the package.
  • Electrical Work: We do not handle electrical work beyond the pressure tank. Any connections to the breaker panel must be completed by a licensed electrician.
  • Service Call Fee: A $200.00 service fee will be charged if the trench is not dug by the time we arrive, and no cancellation call was made to our office.
How do I care for my new well?
  • Maintenance: Fortunately, there is little maintenance required for your new well. We recommend getting the water tested, which you can do with a free test kit from our office, A & L Laboratory in Auburn, or any filtration/water testing company of your choice. The test kit includes a chain of custody form, and you can choose which tests you want to pay for.
  • Sediment Filter: All drilled wells should have at least a sediment filter installed before running water into the house. We do not provide filtration services.
  • Water Discoloration: It's normal for the water to be discolored, muddy, or silty at first. This will usually clear up with regular use. Do not drink or bathe in this water until it clears up.
  • Chlorination: Our drillers will chlorinate the well before leaving the site, and the pump crew will do so after installation or a service call. Chlorine in the water will cause an automatic failure in water tests, so avoid using the water if you detect any chlorine odor. Do not wash clothes or items that could be damaged by chlorine.
